Third-party notices

Artwork, typefaces, data and software we did not make.

Parts of the Promote:Global app and of this website were made by other people, and their licenses ask us to say so. This page is where we say it. Each entry names the work and, where there is a page to point at, links to where its author and its license are stated.

What this page covers

Everything listed here is something we distribute: it is compiled into the app you download, or served by this website. Live data the product fetches while you use it is a different matter, and Trade and economic data below says where that is credited instead.

Naming a work and its author here credits them. It does not mean they endorse Promote:Global, have reviewed it, or are connected with it — appearing on this page says only that we use their work.

U.S. state flags, in the app

The app shows a state flag beside a U.S. company’s registered region. The 55 flags it carries are Nuvola-style SVGs from Wikimedia Commons. The artwork is unmodified: the file in the app is the file as it was published.

The licenses are not all the same, so each flag below carries its own. Today that is:

The author of each file is named on that file’s page on Wikimedia Commons, together with the license it was published under, which is why every entry links there rather than restating a name we would then have to keep in step.

Place names and regions, in the app

When you pick a country, a region or a city in the app, the list you pick from is built from the GeoNames geographical database — its cities of over 15,000 people, and its first- and second-level administrative regions. GeoNames publishes that data under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0.

We changed it: the three GeoNames files were combined into one country-to-region-to-city index, trimmed to the fields the app needs, and stored in the app’s own format. The place names themselves are GeoNames’.

Typefaces

Two typefaces set everything you read in the app and on this site, and both are published under the SIL Open Font License, Version 1.1.

  • Newsreader — “Copyright 2020 The Newsreader Project Authors”, github.com/productiontype/Newsreader. Its license text is at google/fonts, and a copy ships inside the app beside the font. This site serves Newsreader unchanged. The app carries a modified copy: one weight, instanced from the variable font and cut down to the characters the wordmark needs.
  • Outfit — “Copyright 2021 The Outfit Project Authors”, github.com/Outfitio/Outfit-Fonts. Its license text is at google/fonts. This website serves it unchanged.

Land outlines

The globe on this site and the one in the app draw the world’s coastlines as a grid of dots, sampled from country outlines derived from Natural Earth. Natural Earth’s terms of use place its map data in the public domain and say that “crediting the authors is unnecessary”. We are crediting them anyway, because a page that only lists the credits it is compelled to give is a shorter page than an honest one.

Device frames, on this website

Where this site shows a screen of the app inside a phone, the phone around it is device frame artwork from the Bezel device-mockup app rather than a photograph of our own. The screen inside the frame is ours.

Apple’s own artwork

The icons throughout the iOS app are SF Symbols, and the “Download on the App Store” badge on this site is Apple’s, used unmodified at the size Apple specifies. Both are Apple’s artwork, provided to developers under Apple’s own terms rather than an open-source license, and both are named here for the same reason as everything else on this page: we did not draw them.

Software this website serves

This website’s pages are built and delivered with the open-source packages below. Each one publishes its own license, named as that project states it.

The iOS app has no section here because it contains no third-party code: it is built entirely from Apple’s own frameworks and ours, with no package dependencies of any kind.

Trade and economic data

The trade figures, tariff rates and market numbers the product shows you are fetched live from external sources while you use it, rather than bundled into the app, so they are not listed above. The product names the source and the year beside each figure at the point it shows it, which is the only place a number and its provenance can be read together. Our terms of service set out that those sources remain subject to their own terms.

If a credit here is wrong

If something on this page misnames an author, points at the wrong license, or leaves out a work of yours that we distribute, write to us and we will correct it. Say which work you mean and where you found it.
