2. What to look into next
Our reading
The research marks coffee, oilseeds and dried pulses as lines a small or mid-sized company could be in. If yours is one, check which markets buy that line, not only Ethiopia’s top destinations overall.
Source: UN Comtrade, Ethiopia exports by product, 2023 (opens in a new tab) · as of October 9, 2024
Based on: Top goods exports
Soya beans grew 191% from 2022 to 2023; flax yarn grew 99% from 2022 to 2023. A growing line can mean buyers are looking for more; confirm it with that line’s buyers before you plan around it.

3. Trade agreements
What each arrangement can mean for a seller, and its limits. A preference is conditional: check the rules of origin before you quote.
African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA)
Ethiopian goods that meet AfCFTA origin rules may enter other members at preferential duty once the importing country applies its schedule.
Ethiopia has notified the Secretariat that it trades under AfCFTA preferences; check the importing country's own schedule before you claim a preference.

AGOA
AGOA, the United States' trade preference program for eligible African countries, runs to 2028, but Ethiopian goods do not receive its duty-free entry while Ethiopia is not designated.
The President did not designate Ethiopia for 2026; a 2027 review is open, so check the latest Federal Register notice.

Everything but Arms (EBA)
Ethiopian goods that meet the origin rules enter the European Union duty free and quota free, except arms and ammunition.
Rules-based preference, not unconditional market access; new European Union rules apply from January 1, 2027, so check the origin rules that then apply.

Developing Countries Trading Scheme (Comprehensive Preferences)
Ethiopian goods that meet the origin rules enter the United Kingdom under the scheme's most generous preference tier.
Rules-based preference, not unconditional market access; confirm product rules with United Kingdom customs.
